Summer Fun

The Bascom Library is the place for everyone in the family. On first and third Tuesdays, adults and seniors can enjoy classic movie nights in the community room at 4:30pm. Teen Tuesdays run from 4-6pm with games, activities and more. There are daytime story hours for kids, craft classes, ESL, tutoring and a host of enrichment programs offered. Don’t forget family movie nights! Stop in and pick up a brochure or visit www.SJPL.org.

Kelley Park is hosting monthly sunset walks. June 7 will focus on Climate, July 12 is Obon Festival, August 23 is Ranger Day and September 13 is Hispanic Heritage Month. This is in addition to the fairs, fiestas and events held there. Or, you may want to visit History Park’s summer time music and movie nights on the 2nd and last Fridays of the month. Happy Hollow will keep you and the family entertained all day and is great for groups.  Plaza de Caesar Chavez downtown has the ever popular water fountains and summer games. Our parks department has an abundance of play spaces and activities to keep the entire family happy all summer. For more information visit https://apm.activecommunities.com/sanjoseparksandrec

Guadalupe River Parks and Gardens hosts a variety of classes and events through the summer. Volunteers can help maintain the Heritage Rose Garden or the Heritage orchard. Camp Guadalupe for kids is both educational and fun.  The Renaissance Fair arrives in August. You can take composting classes, learn about habitats or just hike and bike the miles and miles of trails. Don’t forget to visit the all access Rotary Playground! Grpg.org

Music in the Park kicks off the season on June 21 at Plaza de Caesar Chavez. If you can’t wait until August for Jazz Fest 2019, there are events throughout the summer at a multitude of locations. Visit sanjosejazz.org

First Fridays Artwalk in the SOFA district are great evenings with music, food, art and activities. Or you can enjoy a free evening at the San Jose Museum of Art thanks to Facebook First Fridays.

If you are going to the 4th of July Fireworks at Discovery Meadow you should plan to get there early and stake out your seating. Then enjoy the evening

Shakespeare in the Park has begun its season of free plays at the Willow Street Bramhall Park. There’s also a kids Shakespeare Summer Camp. For information go to https://www.svshakespeare.org

It’s not too soon to plan for the 2019 National Night Out. The first Tuesday in August is an international night of building neighborhoods, to get to know your neighbors and to help make our communities safer. You can host a small block event in your front yard, get permits from the city of San Jose and have a bigger block party, organize a walking tour or whatever you like. If you register for the event, the city and county will work with you to have resources available, send staff or have police and fire stop by. There are lots of good ideas on the national website https://natw.org and if you need SONA to help, let us know.

SONA will be taking July off so we can have fun, too!  See you in the fun zones.
